Things I learned in my 10 years of Marriage

I believe in the eternal union of husband and wife. In the beginning, when God created the man and woman, He blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful, and multiply.." (Genesis 1:22). God Himself, married Adam and Eve. Therefore, marriage is ordained of God.

After serving a full-time mission for our church,  I prayed earnestly to Heavenly Father to guide me during this critical time of my life. As days passed by, it became clearer and clearer to me what should I do next. Marrying in the temple became a distinct decision to me.

I chose to marry Kevron because it is to him that I have this strong feeling to raise a family. I have no doubts in my heart. I would love to be his help meet, a companion for life and forever. I have a strong faith and trust in the Lord's timing that things will work out between us as we came from different parts of the world. I am from the Philippines and he is from USA.

I was not scared at all to leave the Philippines, my family, friends and the things that I love about the place where I was raised to marry my Husband. I am ready to build my own family.

In the Bible, Jesus himself taught the importance of marriage and relationship of husband and wife. The Pharisees inquired of Him saying, "Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?". Jesus answered, "Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,...He continued, "For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife : and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. The Pharisees inquired again, "Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?. Jesus replied to them" Moses because the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives:but from the beginning it was  not so." Matthew 19:3-8

Learning is a long process. In the course of my marriage, I have learned:

1. Having a place of our own gave us privacy, freedom and opportunities to grow.

2. The first five years of marriage is  hard. During this time, we learned about each other's personality. It was a huge adjustment.

3. You are your spouse's number one supporter and fan. Whatever pursuit of learning we both engage ourselves in, we support each other. We both take the time to talk about it and witness it. We are each other's inspiration.

4. Keeping Christ as the center of our relationship. This helps us focus on our eternal perspective. Whatever storm and calamity that come to us, hope through Christ is a source of strength and direction. Whatever insight and spiritual realization we both have, we share them to each other. I am grateful for the opportunity we have to change and improve our lives. This is only through Jesus Christ.

5. Saying I'm Sorry . We commit mistakes and have weaknesses. Kev and I are good at this. It softens the heart and helps in the healing process. Plus it is an important step in the process of repentance.

6. Communication is vital. Kev and I try our best to be updated about each other's activities. I love it when we talk about life, our ups and downs, feelings, hopes and goals. We specially take the time to talk about our relationship with each other.

7. Our marriage is the most important relationship. My priority is my spouse. My marriage is more important than the relationship that I have with friends, co -workers, hobbies, parents and even my children. My spouse is my partner in building a family. Whatever I do, it will affect my spouse's life or welfare and vice versa. No matter what happens, my loyalty is to my Husband.

8. Dating, having time together and sense of humor. These add flavor to our marriage. It strengthens our relationship. Life goes by fast and we arrive in  new circumstances and new experiences. We get to continue in learning more about each other. Let romance continue and enjoy each other's company.

9.  Be each other's shelter from the storm. Kevron is my very best friend! I can go to him for strength during my challenges, trials and problems.

10. Traditions. I am very excited about establishing our own traditions. We choose the ones that we both enjoy doing. Example: hiking, camping and adventures. I am glad that we both have the same likes.

11. Understanding  each other's expressions of love. I express my love to my Husband verbally, giving him praises and appreciation and being grateful for him. Kev is the same to me.

I love my Husband with my whole heart. And when I define it, I am thinking of the eternal welfare of his soul.  For me, this is true love.
